Please support our new initiative: Hamba Nawe, a paediatric palliative care program

Dear Volunteers,

We ask for your support, regarding our new initiative: Hamba Nawe, a paediatric palliative care program.

“Hamba Nawe” – “We Walk with You,” and that is our aim.

Paediatric palliative care is a holistic approach to caring for children and their families facing chronic, life-limiting illnesses. The needs of children are unique and different from those of adults. The Hamba Nawe initiative aims to address the urgent needs of paediatric patients with life-threatening conditions through comprehensive, interdisciplinary, family-centred care within the Hamba Nawe unit.

Families caring for a child with a life-threatening illness face immense emotional stress, practical caregiving responsibilities, disruptions in daily life, financial burdens, and difficulties navigating healthcare systems.

To support these families, we are creating care bags filled with essential items. We are asking for donations of the following items:

  • Woolies bags: Please donate any extra Woolies bags you may have.
  • Children’s books and Bibles: These items can provide comfort and make memories for terminal sick children families.
  • Toiletries: We need soap, toothbrushes, face cloths, and cream for sore bodies.
  • Small, fluffy blankets: These can provide warmth and comfort.
  • Dry food: Two-minute noodles or soups are easy to prepare and provide nourishment.

Donations can be picked up or dropped off at Daybreak House with a clear sticker labeled “Hamba Nawe.”

We also need support with the following:

  • Travel/Transport Fund – Many families struggle to bring their children to and from the hospital for essential care. This fund helps cover transport costs, ensuring that children receiving palliative care are not denied access to treatment, follow-ups, or family visits due to financial constraints.
  • Bereavement and Burial Support – Losing a child is an unimaginable heartbreak, and many families cannot afford funeral expenses. This fund provides financial relief to grieving families, helping them honour their child’s memory with dignity and peace of mind.
  • Memory Boxes – We help families create lasting memories of their children by providing personalised memory boxes. These contain handprints, photos, and cherished keepsakes, offering comfort and a tangible way to remember their child’s life and love.
  • Toiletries – Many families arrive at the hospital with little more than the clothes they are wearing. Donations help us provide essential toiletries such as soap, toothpaste, sanitary products, and nappies, ensuring that children and caregivers can maintain basic hygiene and dignity during their stay.
  • Food Parcels – A hospital stay can place significant financial strain on families, often leaving caregivers unable to earn income and afford food. Our food parcels support families in need, providing nourishment during hospital visits and at home, so they can focus on their child’s care without the added worry of hunger.

Imagine having a child with a life-threatening illness and not having financial means to travel and speak to the doctor or see your child.

Your contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in the lives of these children and their families. Thank you.

THE ALARMING RISE OF CSAM AND CHILD EXPLOITATION IN SOUTH AFRICA

As an activist dedicated to the protection of children’s rights, it is with deep concern that we address the increasing prevalence of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and child pornography in South Africa. The digital landscape, while offering numerous benefits, has also become a breeding ground for predators who exploit our most vulnerable—our children. Menlo park High School: A Heartfelt Commitment to Charity

Menlo park High School: A Heartfelt Commitment to Charity

In a remarkable display of compassion and community spirit, the pupils of Hoërskool Menlo park have come together to raise funds for charity, demonstrating that even young hearts can make a significant impact on the lives of those in need. This initiative, part of their annual Omgeeweek, has not only fostered a sense of responsibility among students but has also provided vital support to vulnerable groups, particularly abandoned and neglected babies.

The Power of Giving Back

The phrase “Menlo maak harte oop” (Menlo opens hearts) encapsulates the ethos behind this charitable endeavor. Students engaged in various activities to gather donations, showcasing their creativity and commitment to helping others. The funds raised during this week were directed towards several organizations dedicated to caring for the most vulnerable members of society, including Daybreak House for Babies.

A Grateful Partnership

As Daybreak House for Babies, we are profoundly thankful to the pupils of Menlo park High School for their generous contributions. Their efforts directly support our mission to provide a loving and safe haven for abandoned, neglected, and vulnerable babies who desperately need a forever home. Each donation received is not just a monetary contribution; it represents hope and compassion extended towards those who often feel forgotten.

Hope Looks Different for Everyone

The quote by Steve Maraboli resonates deeply with our mission: “A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.” For many of the babies we care for, hope comes from the kindness of strangers—like the students at Menlo Park—who choose to make a difference.

Hope manifests in various forms; some find it in the promise of spring and rain, while others see it in the warmth of a sunrise. For those unable to give back themselves, like the vulnerable babies at Daybreak House, hope often hinges on the actions of compassionate individuals willing to lend a helping hand.

A Lasting Impact

During Omgeeweek, students had the opportunity to witness firsthand the fruits of their labour as they distributed collected items to various organizations such as Wollies, Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis, Brainlife, Loeriehuis Jeugsentrum, and Gracia Haven Kinderhuis. This experience left an indelible mark on every participant’s heart, reinforcing the importance of community involvement and empathy.

Creating Change Together

At Daybreak House, we believe that every child deserves love and security. Our commitment is unwavering as we strive to provide nurturing care for our little ones. The support from Menlopark High School not only aids us in meeting immediate needs but also inspires hope for a brighter future for these children.

We encourage everyone to reflect on how they can contribute—whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness about the plight of abandoned babies. Together, we can create a ripple effect of kindness that transforms lives.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Hoërskool Menlopark and its pupils. Your dedication to helping others exemplifies the spirit of giving that is essential in our world today. Let us continue to work hand-in-hand to bring hope and healing to those who need it most.
