Self-Reflection – Experience at The Grové Schoombee Foundation
Before I started my internship at The Grové Schoombee Foundation, I had a general understanding that there are organizations dedicated to caring for vulnerable children. However, I did not fully appreciate the depth of the work involved or the life-changing impact that such organizations have on children, families, and communities.
When I first arrived, my focus was mainly on completing the tasks assigned to me. As the days went by, I began to observe much more than just the daily responsibilities. I witnessed a culture of compassion, commitment, and genuine care. The caregivers, staff members, and everyone who visits the Foundation contribute to creating a warm, safe, and welcoming environment where every child is treated with dignity and love.
One of the most meaningful things I noticed was the joy and security reflected in the children’s lives. Their smiles, confidence, and the strong bonds they have with their caregivers demonstrate that they feel safe, valued, and cared for. Seeing this reminded me that providing children with love, stability, and protection is just as important as meeting their physical needs.
This experience has changed my perspective. I now understand that a place of safety is much more than providing shelter—it is about creating an environment where children can heal, grow, and have hope for a brighter future. Every child deserves the opportunity to experience love, security, and the chance to thrive, regardless of the circumstances they were born into.
As a communication intern, I have also come to appreciate the important role that communication plays in the work of a non-profit organization. Sharing stories, raising awareness, and engaging with communities through platforms such as the Daybreak website and social media are powerful ways to inspire action, encourage volunteering, and attract support for children who need it most.
My time at The Grové Schoombee Foundation has been more than just a learning opportunity—it has been a personal journey of growth. It has strengthened my empathy, broadened my understanding of child protection, and reminded me that even small acts of kindness and service can have a lasting impact. I leave this experience inspired by the Foundation’s mission and grateful to have witnessed first hand the difference that dedicated people can make in the lives of vulnerable children every single day.
